You’ve got to visit Hachimantai in the Spring

You can bus or drive from Morioka to the Hachimantai Mountaintop Rest House, and walk from there: https://goo.gl/maps/rstUT5GPaDAqjRM17

Lots of great hikes start here. It’s an area only open from mid-April through November. The snowfall is so heavy during the winter that you can only get there by hiking for hours from the base with snowshoes or skis.

If you’re interested in hiring me to guide you either on a hike or around town, send me an email through this channel or message me on Instagram or Twitter.

  1. So weird to see the top of Hachimantai in the snow but with half the platform and the trees exposed! Without context I would have assumed that half the year's snow had melted but if I understand you correctly, there wasn't much more to start with?

  2. I was expecting to see you in snow shoes! Is the snow that hardpacked that regular boots were sufficient? I'm fascinated!

  3. Glad you're guiding so many people now, and sharing these beautiful places in person, it sounds like an enjoyable and rewarding thing to do!
The lakes all look awesome. And I'm always amused by the plowed road totally walled by snow.

  4. You sound as if you're buzzing with excitement-joy about how active things have been for you as of late. Those wintry places are beautiful but I don't know how well my body would take it as that much cold might inflict a toll on me I couldn't predict. How has your temp-swing and change-in-altitude tolerance changed over the years in your journey of becoming an accomplished/seasoned hiker of Japan?

  5. You're such a great ambassador for Hachimantai and just tagging along with you via these videos is a lovely experience so I can only imagine the fun that the people you guide in person get to enjoy. I'm happy a lot more work has come your way, and I shall continue to look forward to your videos even if they aren't as frequent. They are always a treat and have never disappointed.

  6. I can’t wait to visit the Tohoku region one day. Tohoku and Shikoku are next on my list (depends on the season I can arrange things really).

  7. Another great video on Northern Japan, as usual.😎👍 I also have a hard time getting the time to make videos! The Hachimantai area is at the top of my list to spend time in on my next Japan trip, hopefully next winter… ❄❄

  8. It's great to hear that you are busy, Quinlan. It's curious to understand the patterns of tourism. Nagano is in the mountain but is also less than 2 hours away by Shinkansen from Tokyo (Nagano City). Do you have an opinions on Toyama? I feel it gets skipped over in between Nagano and Kanazawa. Looking forward to visiting Morioka/Iwate for the second time soon.

  9. Winter was coming to a close in my area of NA by mid April. Had some really unseasonable warm days and lots of rain, cleared out all the snow. The cooler temperatures at higher elevations should keep snow for longer.

Some nice scenery up around Hachimantai.

  10. It’s great to hear that you’re busy guiding people Quinlan, another excellent video showing off such beautiful areas. Less crowded sounds absolutely perfect to me 😊 best wishes to you moving forward into the year

  11. Nice place You showed us and You work hard to make it another crowded place like all the others You mentioned.

  12. Love the videos! Always very chill. Just moved to Japan, so hoping to get up there sometime to explore!
