Kameido Tenjin Shrine’s Wisteria Festival

A tour of the Kameido Tenjin Shrine, famous for its wisteria festival every year in April.

Kameido Tenjin Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Koto, Tokyo, Japan. It was founded in the 17th century and dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and politician who is venerated there as the patron of learning.

The shrine became famous for its beautiful wisteria blossoms in the Edo period (1603-1868), and it began to be featured by the artists of the day including the Ukiyo-e artists Hokusai and Hoshige.

The wisteria trellises were built in the early 18th century and it’s still a popular destination for Hanami – flower viewing, and probably Tokyo’s finest display of wisteria.

The wisteria festival at Kameido Tenjin Shrine takes place in late April to early May each year when the flowers are in full bloom. During the festival, the shrine is illuminated at night providing a spectacular view of the flowers, and visitors can enjoy food and drink stalls and street entertainers.

In addition to its wisteria, Kameido Tenjin Shrine is also known for its beautiful gardens, which famously features 2 tall ‘drum bridges’ over its ponds leading to the main shrine. It’s a must-see if you’re visiting Tokyo in April!

  1. This tale has a very nice flow. It feels calming, just like Antiques Roadshow. I particularly liked the part where you pray for more views. Keep up the good work. More tales from the floating world please. 👍
