岡山県の中西部、高梁市に位置する「頼久寺（らいきゅうじ）」は、南北朝時代、足利尊氏が日本各地に建立した安国寺の一つです。その中にある国指定名勝の庭園は、備中国奉行となった小堀遠州（こぼり えんしゅう）の初期の作庭（1605年頃）で、「蓬莱式枯山水」の庭園です。俗に「鶴亀の庭」と呼ばれる天下の名園で、はるかに望む愛宕山（あたごやま）を借景に、砂の波紋で海洋の感じを出し、中に鶴亀二島を配し、さらに、小堀遠州独特の大海の波をあらわすサツキの大刈り込みで背景を整えています。
Located in Takahashi City in the midwestern part of Okayama Prefecture, Raikyuji Temple is one of the Ankokuji temples built by Ashikaga Takauji in various parts of Japan during the Nanbokucho Period. The garden in the temple, designated as a national place of scenic beauty, was created in the early period (around 1605) by Kobori Enshu, who became the magistrate of Bicchu Province, and is a “Horai-style dry landscape garden. With Mt. Atago in the distance in the background, the ripples in the sand create a maritime atmosphere, and the two islands of cranes and turtles are arranged in the middle of the garden.
