Our host visited Bungoono City and Taketa City in Oita Prefecture.

In Bungoono City, they explored Fukoji Temple, which is famous for its stone buddhas.

Bungoono City boasts one of the largest collections of stone buddhas in Japan, with many of them being carved from pyroclastic flow that erupted from Mt. Aso around 90,000 years ago.
However, the ones at Fukoji Temple are even older, coming from 120,000-year-old pyroclastic flow.

The cliffside carving of Fudo-Myo-o is over 36ft high, making it the largest of its kind in Japan.

With Fudo-Myo-o in the center, both sides are flanked by carvings of Kongara Doji and Seitaka Doji, while to the right are carvings of Tamonten and Benzaiten.

Fukoji Temple is also known as the “Hydrangea Temple” owing to the roughly 2,000 hydrangeas that bloom around mid-June, attracting numerous sightseers.

Next, our host visited Harajiri Falls, which flows from the Ogata River in the Harajiri area of Ogata Town, Bungoono City, forming a 393ft-wide horseshoe-shaped waterfall with a height of 65ft.

The waterfall was formed from collapsed welded tuff rock that cooled and hardened by pyroclastic flow after a large-scale eruption at Mt. Aso.

It is one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, and is counted amongst the 100 Landscapes of Oita Prefecture as part of the Oita Bungoono Geopark.

Moreover, being located in a plain, it is easy to reach, and the Takimi-bashi suspension bridge allows you to see the waterfall from above while other paths lead down to the waterfall basin, letting you fully absorb the grand scenery.

At Taketa City, our host tried the famous local B-kyu (B-grade) gourmet dish of karaage fried chicken at Taketa Marufuku.

The restaurant has served Taketa City locals for 50 years, and won at the 3rd Oita B-kyu Gourmet Grand Prix in 2011.

Taketa Marufuku’s karaage is made with chicken raised in their own poultry farm, yielding bulky, succulent morsels. Best of all, prices are very reasonable, earning them lots of long-time fans across all generations.

We hope that this video inspires you to come and see the historical stone buddhas crafted from natural phenomena occurring over 120,000 years ago in Bungoono City, alongside the “Niagara of the East” Harajiri Falls before treating yourself to some locally-loved karaage in Taketa City.
