Everyone raves about the cherry blossoms in Japan – but far fewer know about its close rival – the gorgeous wisteria season as well.
There are not as many large places like Kurogi no Ofuji to see the beautiful wisteria, which normally comes out around the end of April and enjoyed through early May. Two of the most famous are the Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi, and the Kawachi Fujien in Kitakyushu – but both are overrun by huge crowds. Kurogi no Ofuji is still a much less known festival or Matsuri, and you don’t have to swim through an ocean of people. Like Kawachi Fujien, the wisteria covers about 3000 square meters. The beautiful wisteria makes up part of Susano Shrine.
Kurogi no Ofuji also has a long history, with some trees over 600 years old.
