I kept looking at this like "I don't know how much one tiny screen will do." Then I saw the end and thought "well I'll be damned." Lol
In the US, we have a law called “adverse possession”. This law states that if you use someone else’s property for X amount of time, you gain ownership of that property. It could be as simple as you erecting a fence several meters on their side of the property line, to occupying a vacant house. If Japan has a similar law, which I doubt, you could gain ownership of that strip if the neighbor never objects to your using it.
Strange the thinking in Japan about old houses not being worth putting money into when you see how poorly your new neighbours house was built.
Especially when you consider the craftsmanship that goes into the old homes and the built by hand nature of them.
Love watching the unskilled labor. You are truly a good guy for fixing that path.

I wonder if the average Japanese homeowner would be this creative or industrious in something they were not skilled in.

I live in the U.S. and here the person who has an easement can't build on the easement. It's just for travel unless it states that in the easement like the utilities easements. The people who own it are the ones you will have to worry about. They probably won't care unless they do. GL
