We Bought a Japanese Vacant House – Update of Akiya Renovation

We bought an old Japanese house (Akiya). This abandoned Japanese house is in rural Japan. Follow our Akiya home renovation and Japanese countryside living. I bought a JDM Kei truck AKA Japanese Mini Truck to help clean the previous owner’s property and daily Japanese rural living. We travel Japan as much as possible and provide travel tips in Japan.

  1. Your Akiya looks like it has a very strong structure & a good roof which is important before a total reno. I like that you're having concrete poured under the floor. It might cost more up front, but it's an investment that hopefully will save you time & money in the future. What is your timeframe for completion of the renos and if you don't mind, would you share an approximation of your construction budget? Also how will you insulate the house (walls, floor & ceilings) ? Do you plan to replace or use double-pane windows?

  2. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure. My husband and I just recently started considering purchasing a home in rural Japan. We're still just in the "hey, you know what would be cool" stage.I also have a question: what is internet like in these rural areas? Is there a high speed option available?

  3. You did the right thing IMO getting the foundations right. The builder wants to make sure the house his old father built lasts another 50 years.
