Okinawa’s biggest traditional event, Naha Giant Tug-of-War will be held on October 10th, 2010. It’s said that the history of Naha Giant Tug-of-War started around 1451, about 560 years ago. Tug-of-War was not being held in 1936 to 1970, but in 1971, the year of 50th anniversary of Naha City, it revived to celebrate. Since then, it is held on Sunday before the second Monday of every October.
At 12:00, Parade of 14 Flags starts on Asato Intersection, the Northern entrance of Kokusai Street. Young men wearing black uniforms represent 14 areas in Naha city. And each area has one or two flags. These flags are community’s symbol and good luck charms for the area. Flags are decorated gorgeously and beautifully.
The gigantic rope is recognized as the biggest rope made by straw in the world by Guinness World Records. The total length of the rope is about 200 meters (656 feet) and its weight is 43 tons. The event gathers more than 250,000 spectators. Anybody is welcome to join the tug-of-war. Enjoy the biggest event in Okinawa!
