Being LOCAL: “Dosanko” in Hokkaido, Japan vs “Kamaaina” in Hawaii

Being local or “Dosanko” in Hokkaido means being born and raised on the island of Hokkaido, the largest and northernmost island in Japan. It is a similar concept to being local in Hawaii or a “Kamaaina.” The only difference is that in Hawaii, you can be a Kamaaina if you have lived in Hawaii for several years, but to be Dosanko, you cannot be a transplant or born outside of Hokkaido. Hawaii also offers “Kamaaina Discounts” during the off-tourist season, but being Dosanko has no real benefit outside of the pride and “Badge of Honor” that you were born and raised in Hokkaido – “Hokkaido Home Grown.” 😉
