Katsumi Kanbayashi, 76, is the founder of Kyoto’s Katsumi Sometomo Shobien, one of the last industrial-scale “noren” dyeing factories in Japan. Kanbayashi is self-taught as a curtain maker and the company, which employs eight, still makes curtains from the screen prints he first introduced more than 40 years ago. “It was more like noren suited what I was doing, rather than me choosing to become a curtain maker,” Kanbayashi says.
