In today’s video, Shizuka goes on a spiritual journey up Mt. Haguro, dressed head to toe in a white uniform. These clothes are the traditional uniform of a Yamabushi, an order of ascetic monks in Yamagata prefecture. Led by a yamabushi guide, Shizuka climbs over 2000 steps to ascend this sacred mountain.
On the top of the mountain, Shizuka is rewarded with a shojin ryori feast! Shojin ryori is traditional vegetarian Buddhist food, and the ingredients used are all from the surrounding mountain area. The beautiful scenery and traditional training are a great way to experience a day in the life of a yamabushi.
