  1. An interesting part of the world, I can't imagine many Japanese people even know where that island is.

  2. Long time viewer, very happy to see you visiting this part of Japan. My wife grew up on Miyakojima and we go back once or twice a year to visit family. You're right about the island being quaint, especially during the off season (Oct-Mar). It's not immediately obvious but there are two major common interests among many Miyako residents, the real drawcards which people from Honshu move permanently to the island for: scuba diving, and marathons/triathlons. The annual Miyakojima Strongman triathlon is so popular that entry is capped and tickets are sold on a lottery system to ensure the island's infrastructure can cope. It's one of the busiest times of the year for the local tourism industry with many top-level international entrants. I've been visiting the island for about 12 years, and just in that time it's become significantly more developed – the first McDonalds, 24 hour MaxValu supermarket, Don Quixote, Yamada Denki, etc. I believe the first Lawson is about to open, if it hasn't already. The bridge to Irabu has similarly led to huge changes over there – such as Marriott opening an ultra-luxury hotel. A gigantic Hilton is due to open this year on Miyako too. For a couple of years before the pandemic, flights direct from Hong Kong to Shimojishima Airport (Irabu) had launched and I suspect it's only a matter of time before they start back up. It feels the quaint Miyakojima's days are numbered and in 10-20 years it will be marketing itself to many nearby Asian neighbours as a cost effective tropical getaway. On the chanpuru discussion towards the end of the video – the word itself just means to "mix" (it's a loan word from Malay/Indonesian campur) and at its heart, the dish is just a stir fry. Chanpuru doesn't usually contain bitter melon, except for goya chanpuru, which has become one of the more 'iconic' dishes found in Okinawan restaurants in the mainland. I suspect the one you were served may have been just tofu chanpuru. Anyway, thanks very much for letting us join you on your adventures and I'm excited to see the rest of the series!!

  3. really funny episode, not having a precise plan made the episode feel more like a free flowing video, it was interesting

  4. I don´t need to hunt for treasure i get treasure every time i watch another one of your adventures! 🙂

I wonder what that graffiti said, must have been something serious for them to be excommunicated and banished to that small island, there is more to the story. Oddly enough i was just starting to eat some nuts myself and here you are eating nuts out of a bottle 🙂

Question is, what did you eat the day after, a bento or what Kyde had in mind? Whatever that was?
Onwards to the next adventure! Keep up the great work!

  5. Always love your adventures! Kyde calling people twerps, and Eric telling her she couldn’t was great.

  6. You were so far out, great edge exploring! Hope you can visit outside of Japan soon though 🙏

  7. Can you find out more about that gari shoga plastic container with the squeeze lid tongs?
Would love to get some ❤️

  8. To be fair to Kyde, that tree might be a hala tree (that is the Hawaiian name anyway, the official name is "Pandanus tectorius") which the little ends do look like a banana bunch when it's brand new.

  9. Have you considered taking a ferry? I guess it's a big time commitment, but boats in Japan are nice.

  10. I live in Miyakojima. I think you must have already left there by now but I wanted to recommend some must see spots for anyway, maybe other people will find it useful. I noticed you guys were nervous about being allowed to go see the goats, but please don't be afraid as long as they're not like behind a barb wired fence no one minds you going to pet them. Living out here is very lax with the rules. It made me laugh about the taxi drivers and how it seems so quaint compared to Tokyo. It's so true. I always feel so relieved when I come back from Tokyo. Miyakojima feels like one of the last outposts of civilization in the middle of the ocean. The people here are so kind and treat me like family. It's also just big enough to never really get to know everybody. Definitely a small town. People are surprised that they need to rent a car when they come to Miyakojima. Everything is so spread out here.

I hope you guys enjoyed yourselves! I'm so excited to see where you guys went and see Miyako through your eyes!

My top 20 places in Miyakojima:
    1. 東平安名崎 Higashi-henna-zaki or the Eastern Cape is the most beautiful place in Miyakojima. It's a long, thin peninsula that juts out into the sea. In the water all around it are lime stone rocks brought into the shallow waters by 1000s of years of typhoons. There's also a beach near the harbor there.
    2. Imgya Marine Garden イムギャー マリンガーデン Just look up a picture of this place. It's beautiful.
    3. 新城海岸 Aragusuku Kaigan or the Newcaste coast is a beach that is famous for the high cliff tops behind it and the coral and most of all the sea turtles. There is a shaded canopy of trees between the beach and the parking.
    4. 盛加井 Muikaga is a staircase that leads down into a shallow cave, which has well which was used in ancient times for water.
    5. カママ嶺公園 Kamamamine Park has this white pyramid like structure that you can climb to the top of for a panorama view of the city and coast.
    6. 砂山ビーチ Sunayama beach or sound mountain beach is found at the bottom of a sound mountain. It's only downhill on the way to the beach, but getting back to the parking lot can leave some people out of breath. It has a unique lime stone arch.
    7. パイナガマビーチ Pine-a-gama beach is a beach in the city that is a popular spot for watching the sunset and many people come there to socialize with friends and BBQ.
    8. 宮古サンセットビーチ Near Pine-a-gama beach and the city is the Sunset Beach which is also a huge park. The Hilton hotel is nearing completion here.
    9. Makiyama Observatory 牧山展望台 This is on Irabujima across from Miyakojima by bridge. The Irabu-Ohashi bridge is the longest non-toll bridge in Japan. This observatory is shaped like a white bird and offers an unbeatable view.
    10. Nudokbiab ヌドクビアブ This is a cave, but not one you can go into. Rather you go to the middle of some fields, and follow the path by the sign into the woods. And eventually find a staircase leading down to an open room with vines stretching down from the sky above. It is considered a holy place and you will feel vibes here.
    11. 池間大橋駐車場 Ikema bridge park. The drive to Ikema is beautiful. And at this parking area near the bridge you can walk out to a sand bar during low tide.
    12. Nakanoshima (Kayaffa) 中の島海岸 (カヤッファ) This beach is located in a bay walled by huge cliffs of limestone and the coral found in this natural bay is home to many tropical fish. It's worth seeing even if it's just a stop on the way to Toriike Pond or 17END.
    13. Toriike Pond 通り池 These ponds are huge dude.
    14. 17END This is a sunset viewing place where you can walk around the border of the airfield for Shimojishima airport. People watch airplaces take off here as well as enjoy the beach.
    15. Shinbiji シンビジ This is a staircase that leads down into the sea from the cliff side. It feels like a stairway to nowhere, but it is a staircase to the sea. You can walk there in shallow tide or snorkel there. Very mystical.
    16. This is the observation deck on Kurima island. Because Kurima island is so small, you can see the entire circumference of the island. There is also the Pani Pani cafe which has sand floors with bamboo roof and just very vibey all around.
    Ryuuguujo Observation Deck
    竜宮城展望台
    17. Yonaha Beach 与那覇前浜 The softest sand in Miyako.
    18. 西平安名崎 Nishi-henna-zaki or the Western Cape is smaller than the Eastern cape but no less beautiful. There is a shrimp truck made out of a old school bus there and a two story pick nick area to be a view from up high. Great for star gazing at night away from all the creepy crawlies. There is also the Yuki Shio factory in that area. Which makes Miyakojima specialty sea salt ice cream.
    19. Shimajiri Fisherman's Wharf 島尻漁港 From here you can walk up and catch the ferry to Ogamishima. Which is the smallest of the islands and has an observation deck at the top, a park, and some snorkeling spots as well.
    20. If you go to this FamilyMart you'll be in the downtown area where all the Izakayas and bars are. One of the coolest things about Miyakojima is going out with your friends and walking home and it's just silent aside from a few people.
    ファミリーマート 宮古西里大通り店

LOCAL FOODS: 1) 島の駅 Shima no Eki is the best place to find bentos, local specialties, soba, fresh fruit, and omiyage in general.
Try Sata-andagi! It's a fried dough ball. Basically a doughnut. Very delicious. Also try Yuki-shio ice cream "sea salt ice cream"
    2) ばっしらいん Bass line is a great place to get Okinawa/Miyakojima cuisine. 3) Basically any soba or izakaya for unique Miyakojima stuff

RAMEN options 1) 沖縄宮古島ラーメン天晴 Appare ramen is the best, 2) Ramentonta is the second best ラーメンとん太,
3)北海道ラーメン 追風丸 宮古店 I usually just go to this Hokkaido one because they are always open even in the middle of the day

  11. Excellent as always thank you. When Kyde said the population had dropped by a hundred I thought it happened overnight before it dawned on me that was over a much longer time span. Loved the butterfly camera work btw.

  12. Puddle-jumper was a surprise. I thought that was solely an English term for trains which stop at every small station. Such as Gargrave 🙂

  13. Kyde, just for the record – when I bite it, I'm gonna get "here lies a twerp who died" and you can come read it aloud.

This was a lot of fun! It was cool to see the stoplight from the livestream on the video. I went "oh I was there!" except I most certainly wasn't. xD

But yeah you both seem really happy in this and I love it. Thanks for taking us along!

  14. About that fruit juice. Tankan is a type of tangor, which is a hybrid between a mandarin and an orange. Citruses hybridize with eachother really easily, often naturally just on their own. So yeah, nature did make it! Thats really interesting that it has a mango taste to it!
