This time, our host visited Kokonoe Town, Kusu District, which is a part of the Aso-Kuju National Park.
Aso-Kuju National Park is characterised by Mt. Aso, which soars out of a giant caldera in Kumamoto Prefecture, along with Oita Prefecture’s volcanic Kuju Mountain Range running to the north and the grand, gently sloping grassland that surrounds it.
The southern part of the park around Mt. Aso, is full of magnificent scenery weaving together a unique beauty, such as the smoking crater of Mt. Nakadake, the gorgeous cone-shaped Komezuka, and the vast Kusa-senrigahama grassland, all surrounded by the crater basin and outer rim mountains.
First, our host stopped by Kokonoe “Yume” Otsurihashi.
From this bridge, which is the highest pedestrian bridge in Japan coming in at around 567ft high and 1,279ft long, they enjoyed an expansive, seasonally-changing 360° panorama, encompassing the dynamic soaring rocks of the Narukogawa Gorge and the roar of Shindo Falls, selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls.
Next, at Kokonoe “Yume” Otsurihashi Tenkukan Nigoten, our host enjoyed a local Kokonoe “Yume” Burger, which is made from carefully-selected ingredients grown in lush, fertile land that has cleared strict criteria.
Exquisite local ingredients include Oita Bungogyu beef burgers, as well as wild game like venison and boar used to create a truly unique menu.
Our host tried out a wild game burger, relishing the satisfying patty and luscious sauce.

Next, our host checked out the Chojabaru Visitor Center.
Here you can browse through museum exhibitions, videos, and photos exploring the majestic nature of Kuju.
There is also an observation room and terrace, ideal for visitors to unwind while learning about the wonders of Aso-Kuju National Park through explanations on the animals and plants that live in the grasslands, forests, and more, bolstered by satellite photos and high-definition theater.
Directly behind the Chojabaru Visitor Center is the Tadewara Marsh, which formed in the spring water foothills of the Kuju Mountain Range.
This wetland environment is the precious habitat of a diversity of creatures and unique regional plants, and is painstakingly maintained through controlled burning off.
In 2005, it was registered under the Ramsar Convention as an international important wetland.
There are three kinds of walking courses within the Tadewara Marsh: The Foothill Nature Trail, Relaxed Hiking Trail, and the Mountain Traversing Course.
This allows visitors of all fitness levels to find a course that suits their goal.
