“Kasuga-Taisha” Nara's famous Lantern Shrine – Just Magical!

“Kasuga-Taisha” is one of Nara’s best-kept secrets!

Beautiful from the outside, many do not enter and miss out on a truly magical experience. The Fujinami-no-ya hall may not look that amazing from the outside but as you part the curtain you will enter a magical place, as the room is lit by hundreds of flickering lanterns.

These give you an idea of what the Shrine looks like each year in February and August at the Mantoro Festival. During which around 3,000 lanterns are lit, both inside and outside the Shrine. An amazing sight and well worth visiting if you are in the area around that time.

  1. I visited kasuga taisha right before closing time an october night so was still hot but there was this amazing sunset and then the forest grew pitch black around us as we were rushing through the place and joined by mosquitos haha, THOUGH we did not see those lanterns in that dark room! Wow!

  2. I'm moving to japan this march for teaching and I'm going to be places somewhere in the Kansai region. I'm loving your videos of all the sights to see in the area!
