Japan's Forgotten Highways and Shinjuku Station

Japan is covered in historic trails, but perhaps the most well known is The Edo Five Routes. Established in the Edo period (1603-1868), The Edo Five Routes were a set of trails linking Nihonbashi in Edo, current-day Tokyo, with areas throughout Japan; The Tokaido and Nakasendo both linked Edo with Kyoto, The Koshu Kaido with Kai Province, The Nikko Kaido with Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and The Oshu Kaido with Tohoku and even Hokkaido.

Learn all about how these trails came about, and their connection with the world’s busiest railway station in this video.

Sabane-yama (猿羽根山さばねやま) is a 160m (524. ft.) peak in the Mogami and Murayama regions of Yamagata prefecture best climbed from June to October. Allow at least 3 hours for a climb up Sabane-yama.

  1. Japan is covered in places with names like this. Yamagata means ‘mountain shape’ but apparently used to mean ‘towards the mountains’, the perfect place name! What other places in Japan do you like the name of?

  2. Fantastic video and informative. And makes sense, given Ouchijuku west of Aizu Wakamatsu and directly north of Nikko was a post town and included many inns and restaurants along the route. Though I am not sure if that road is one of the five main "highways" at the time. Another section I think is one west of Shinagawa Station, which probably formed part of the Tokaido route.
