Scenes from the colorful Aomori Nebuta Festival, one of the three major festivals in the Tohoku region in northern Japan. The festival features large-scale floats made of bamboo, wood and paper that depict famous scenes from kabuki, history and myth. More than two dozen floats, which are often festooned with the names of their corporate sponsors, are pushed through the city streets and accompanied by teams of drummer and flute players. Spanning five days, the festival is expected to attract 2.8 million viewers. (Photos by Shusuke Murai).
