Best Tokyo Day Trip | Nokogiriyama "Sawtooth Mountain"

Kamakura is typically everyone’s go-to day trip from Tokyo, mostly for it’s big buddha statue and historical temples. Well, if you want to avoid this crowded tourist trap and go off the beaten path, then you can go to Nokogiriyama, Tyler’s favorite “power spot” in Chiba Prefecture. Tyler and his friends go to this great hidden spot to play a live show and discover what makes Nokogiriyama so special.

This is a really unique mountain range in Japan, notable for it’s “view of hell”, its Kannon statue, and the largest stone buddha in Japan. But what makes Nokogiriyama a perfect travel spot from Tokyo is that it’s not very well-known even among Japanese people, so the normal hustle and bustle of Tokyo tourists is very minimal.

If you have traveled in Tokyo or Japan before, then you probably know the usual tourist spots, so to avoid the crowds and experience something unique, Nokogiriyama is one the best places you can go!

Getting to Nokogiriyama ~ There are 2 different ways to get to this hidden tourist spot, the first is to take the train from Shinjuku to Kurihama station and then take a ferry to the Kaneya port at the base of the mountain.

The second trip route you can take (if you are not a fan of boat travel) is a complete train ride from Shinjuku all the way to Kaneya station through Chiba’s Sotobo Line.

Climbing Nokogiriyama Mountain ~ If you want an easier experience with this beast of a mountain range then you can take the Nokogiriyama Ropeway, an approximately 10 minute walk from the port, which will get you to the observation area at about the halfway point. Then its hiking from that point onward to reach the Giant buddha and Kannon statue. However, if you are an experienced hiker, then you can skip the ropeway and make your day trip a hikers dream through the lush mountainous area with all of its nature.

Warnings about Nokogiriyama~ The ferry is only until 7:30pm so if you are planning on doing a full hike both up and down you might want to keep your eye on the time or plan the trip around those times. On top of that, if you want to avoid the crowds completely make sure you go during the week, as the weekends tend to be a bit more crowded with Japanese tourists on their days off.
