This is the 16th Super Yosakoi. The dance style originated in Kochi Prefecture in the 1950s. At Super Yosakoi, modern interpretations of the dance and music can incorporate jazz, techno or rock-based folk music. It’s anything goes; just has to be super genki.
Here’s a sample of the dances performed in front of NHK near Yoyogi Park on Saturday. The festivities continue today, when the main thoroughfare Omotesando Avenue will be closed to traffic and given over to the super-genki performers. (Mark Thompson @guchagucha photos)
