Yamaga Onsen is one of the oldest spa resorts in Kumamoto. The legend says; Chikaji Uno, who was defeated from Kyoto in the Hogen Disturbance, was hunting in the mountains then he saw a wounded deer soaking in hot water and discovered this hot spring. The name of the hot spring, “Yamaga,” which is also the name of the area, is associated with this legend of the opening of the hot spring.
Yamaga is 山鹿 in Japanese, which is combination of 山; The Mountain and 鹿; Deer.
During the Edo period (1603-1867), Here have been flourished as the first inn town from Kumamoto City going to Kyoto/Edo.
