Sendai Aoba Matsuri Documentary (Miyagi) – Tohoku Traveler – 仙台青葉まつり – Travel in Tohoku

What to do at a Japanese Matsuri (Festival)?

Every third weekend of May, Sendai holds one of its biggest festivals, the “Aoba Matsuri”. An average number of 900,000 people visit this festival every year. The city center transforms into a very colorful and cheerful area. In this video you will see and learn about various things: The big parade at Jozenji Dori (the beautiful avenue lined with zelkova trees), what Japanese festival food looks like, what the “Suzume Odori ” (Sparrow Dance) is, who Date Masamune is…. and many many more things!

It was especially cool to see my friends who were part of the Tohoku University festival team. You and all the other performers practiced hard and did a great job!

The dance performances of the Tohoku University team are at the following minute marks: 02:45, 09:23, 11:23, 15:12, 18:04.

I wanted to take enough time to explain the history and the various activities you can see and do there. Especially aimed at foreign viewers who wonder what a Japanese festival (Matsuri) looks like! My hope is that, after watching this video, you may want to visit Sendai!
