In this Japan vlog, we head to mountains near Osaka to an area called Mount Koya, or Koyasan (and see a serow!). This area is really popular for Temple Stays (which we did!), and we found a way to save a little bit of money, too.
We started at the west end of town, at Daimon Gate. After spending some time looking at this enormous gate, we took a nearby trail to look at some of the bright red mini gates. Then we walked the half hour back into town, where we stumbled across Koya’s middle gate, the Chumon Gate. This gate has some interesting history, because it was burned down in 1843 and left unrecovered until only 7 years ago! Even more interesting was the beautiful Danjo-garan temple tucked away behind it.
We stayed overnight at the amazing Fudo-In Temple. This was a luxury temple experience, with very comfortable beds, a fun toilet, a nice sitting area, and some absolutely incredible food. Highly recommended. The next day, we visited the largest rock garden in all of Japan (Banryutei Rock Garden). There was a special event taking place and monks from all over the mountain joined together in a beautiful chant. Afterwards we visited the Okunoin Cemetary on the edge of town – and it was far more beautiful than we anticipated it would be.
Don’t miss the money saving tip toward the end!

YES, the bells are to ward off bears!!
I also stayed at Shukudo Fudo-in – it's a 900 year old temple! Okuno-in cemetery is one of the most sacred places in Japan. It contains the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi who is the Founder of Shingo Buddhism.
Good morning Guys!!!!
for bears🐻
The Shojin Ryori at the temple looks delicious. I would like to try it once. Is it a vegan dish that mainly consists of beans, vegetables and mushrooms?
It's a Japanese serow.
Bells are bear repellent, and wild animals, not just bears, are basically shy, so making sounds is a good thing.
Have you seen the rocket-shaped grave?
Jizo wearing make-up is also famous. It is said that wishes come true.
Coincidentally, an American woman prayed here and successfully sold used kimonos in America.
The famous thing in the history of Koyasan is the monk soldier.
ニホンカモシカ(天然記念物)を間近で見られる事はまず無いので貴重な体験でしたね。日本の旅を楽しんでください。
So peaceful atmosphere.
日本🇯🇵へ ようこそ☺️

That temple stay sounds and looks so beautiful! Also, also can relate to the mosquito bites! I (Lisa) just got my first one in Miyajima the other day while hiking (Josh-none 😂) love this temple, nature filled video
Okunoin Cemetery has the graves of MAJOR historical people. But the most important is the grave of Kobo Daishi at the end.
!?!? A Japanese serow stayed in soooo close to you!! I'm totally surprised it! I've been thought that I couldn't meet them in my life. You're so lucky😄
Welcome to Japan🇯🇵
I enjoy watching your videos 😊
You guys are lucky to visit the rock garden on a rainy day.
All the rocks were wet so the color was dark and shiny. They looked so beautiful and mysterious.
Thank you for showing us the beautiful site of our country.
Hope you have a great and safe trip!!
