[swipe 👈🏻] The “yamabushi” are the followers of Shugendo, an ancient ascetic religion combining aspects of mountain worship, Buddhism, Shintoism and Taoism. While Shugendo originated during Heian Japan in the eighth or ninth century, its popularity as a pilgrimage route for spiritual rebirth only grew during the Edo period (1603-1868). Today, followers can be found at the Dewa Mountains in Yamagata Prefecture. Those who are interested in the religion, curious about spiritual exploration, or seeking to take a break from the city life can head to Yamagata, where yamabushi will guide them through the Three Mountains of Dewa.
