Hiking Mt. Chokai – the Tallest Volcano in Yamagata

Mt. Chokai is 2,236 meters tall. The trailhead that I used here and recommend is Hokodate: https://goo.gl/maps/L2x8uKjBfjBsnCsL8

The video from two years ago is here: https://youtu.be/UKxWsffw3JE
The video that I did on the Yamabushi is here: https://youtu.be/UVGDfZd-g3s

  1. Japans combination of landscapes Is total unique but the cream on top of it is the friendliness of the people and the phenomenal cuisine. That blows you away if you at least try everything once. And yes you can even miss natto and grilled fish for breakfast 😁😍

  2. What makes Japan unique: #1) Wherever & Whatever you do get up for the day, you can finish your day/eve with quality time in a nearby onsen/sentō.

  3. Beautiful imagery as always. Watching this on my home projector almost makes it feel like I'm actually there with you. Thank you

  4. At my first trip to Japan, back at 2018, I only had a short while in the Yamagata area but to this day I still love it the most out of all the area I've been to. It's beauty with the mountains lined by forests and small towns or villages somehow connected with me on a level I found near instinctive(probably not the right word but I hope I'm understood "^^ ).
Really happy you got to visit this place as well Quinlan 🙂

  5. Awesome. I'm going to hike the Acatenango volcano hike in Guatemala next week. With 3700 meters the highest hiking altitude for me ever.
I'm already planning to go to North Japan within half a year orso, just need to find a good place to stay for a few months.

  6. awesome! I had been wondering about this mountain. it's the only one in Japan that has been hiked up by someone I know personally; I'll recommend this video to her!

  7. The diversity of landscapes in Japan never fails to surprise me. I was definitely getting lord of the rings vibes during this video and strangely even some arctic Norway vibes too – if a reindeer had appeared it would not have looked out of place in some of those settings! I think a trip to Japan has the very strong advantage of giving the visitor the ability to easily combine the experience of a very rich and fascinating culture alongside a stunning mix of natural sites too, something your videos always convey so beautifully.

  8. Great video as always ♥︎. I love how it looks like you have two different backgrounds at the end of the video.

  9. Thanks!!

A perfect start to my sunday, A coffee in hand, enjoying Quinlan's latest adventure!

I've got my flights booked for January, I'm so excited!!!

  10. If you'd love more of those views of Mt. Chokai from above- I actually uploaded a full 4-minute drone video from the footage I took this day. I'm really happy with how it turned out. 11. Brilliant Quinlan! That is a very cool hike. Funny you should mention it was like Lord of The Rings. I felt exactly the same way about Mt Aso down in Kyushu. The back side really looked like Mt Doom. It was erupting at the time so no hiking. Just another of those things that makes Japan special and why we keep going back.

  12. Stunning video. Getting above the clouds really brings home the height. Excellent stuff.

  13. Another great video, seriously if anybody comes to Japan, you need to go on a hike with Quinlan, it was amazing, and one of our best experiences in Japan!

  14. yet another one to add to my super long wishlist. thanks for showing us the awesome beauty of Japans mountains!

  15. thanks for another great video mate always look forward to new ones

  16. What a gorgeous hike! Love your channel. The production is fantastic and educational. As always…thanks for taking us along!

  17. Some really nice views. Not sure if this is standard etiquette in hiking/mountaineering, looks like those ascending have right of way.

  18. Looks beautiful. I'm doing a speed run through Tohoku in the first week of November and if I was staying in Morioka any longer I would've seen if you were available as a guide. I think I'm only there for half a day on 11/4/2022.

  19. Excellent video as always.

It took me a minute to really grasp your channel, but it's quickly become of my favorite channels on YouTube, and definitely one of the best for exploring Japan. You do such an excellent job showing the authentic side of Japan (outside of the major cities), plus you show beautiful scenery and provide amazing educational detail. I feel enriched at each video, so thank you!

  20. We loved your videography (as usual) and capturing the clouds below is always magical!

  21. Beautiful views and hike! I don't know why, but I like seeing the other people going up and down. I notice there's a lot of seniors hiking this mountain. I guess hiking is a common hobby for older Japanese?

  22. Hi, GNJ.
Thank you for clearing the mystery of carved lines on the rocks.
Beautiful view. 2:45 Did you feel thin air?
Wow, these packed rock trail is appreciated by many hikers, I assume.3:18
Well said about this hiking, especially the way you describe it. 3:53 Every time you visit, you will discover something better about it. OMG, is that snow? Gorgeous.4:59 I became a big fan of snow-covered mountains after kayaking to see Mt. Baker in Seattle, WA. Oh, yes, I looked down at the landscape with snow in WI through my airplane's window. Fascinating to learn about culture and religion. 5:56 I am curious when you gave other JP hikers warm welcome greetings, but I didn't hear much in their returns. Are they shy? or just too quiet? just smiling back at you? OMG, the cairn looks a little bit JP tombstone-ish.8:48
What? I didn't know you are a guide. I thought you run an AirBNB business. Have you considered using a body mount for your recording cam? That scrambling is something I cannot climb down with cameras in my hand.
Wow, are there any markings as the trail on scrambling? 11:22 The contrast between the breathtaking blue sky and scrambling. Could you fly your drone at the summit?12:17 Spectacular! You are one of the two foreigners who are able to comprehend JP life and present my home country. I appreciate it. I am a kayaker, but you are one of the hikers who inspired me to go high lands, so I did. Grandfather Mountain in NC, my dying hike. Please see me if you have a little time.
BTW, I have been having an issue my comments on vids disappearing. After the time-consuming work of watching and composing comments, they disappeared in sec. I have not had a solution. 😭😭 I just hope this reaches your door.
