The Fushimi Inari Shrine is located in southern Kyoto and is famous for its seemingly never-ending vermillion gates and breathtaking views. These gates date back to the eighth century. Following the path of the gates, and the trails will lead you into the wooded forest of the sacred Mount Inari, standing at over 200 meters above sea level. These gates, known as the “torii” gates, are seen as the entrance to a sacred shrine in the Shinto religion. What makes these gates special is that they have been each donated by an organization or business giving thanks for their prosperity, and wishing for prosperity in the future. (Reiji Yoshida photos)
