The day has finally come. There are multiple reports that state that Japan will reopen for tourists without the need for a visa starting on October 2022.
Japan’s borders have been closed for over two and a half years and the time has finally come for tourism to return!
Visa waivers are set to come back into effect Kishida announced in New York on Thursday 22nd September!

If true, this is definitley a step in the right direction…. but I'll believe it when I see it! In all seriousness though, knowing how Japan likes to take small steps, in practice not much may change for tourists compared to today. It wouldn't surprise me if tourists were still required to book through a tour agency and have them handle all flights and hotels, but instead of getting an ERFS certificate to take to the embassy and apply for a visa 4-6 weeks ahead of time, you'd present the ERFS certificate at passport control on arrival.

Reading the nhk world japanese comments, Japanese people are really not happy about that news. They fear people wont wear masks and make tourist spots crowded, people will missbehave and bother the residents.

hello nathan! thank you for continuously keeping me and my grandparents updated throughout the last few months on the border situation in japan. when we found out the great news earlier we were really happy but have just one concern. we banked in june on the borders opening up around october. we booked a flight and got very affordable hotels. we leave october 10th and will arrive october 11th will this be fine? we aren’t sure but we are under the assumption that we can because we aren’t in the country until it opens. this is my first time truly flying since only time i have flown was when i was a baby. i’ve asked a few friends and they said it should be alright but i’m still skeptical. if not we can always just move our flight a day later hopefully if the flights aren’t booked through the roof.

I've cancelled three return trips at this point. At this point I've decided that at this point a return trip will be in November or December of 2023. Hopefully by then things will have returned to normal like pre covid. Anyone that has lived in Japan like myself know that once the border opens in October it's going to be a madhouse. I can see many who have never been before, coming and acting a fool and pissing off many locals. I see many rules still being in place when they first open which I'm not interested in. Looking forward to seeing my friends like it was Pre Covid.
