Founded in 1688 under the patronage of the Honganji Temple, Nishijin textiles are distinguished by the special method of interweaving gold leaf thread with silk fiber, one strand at a time.

Making the Nishijin textiles from the silk strands and gold leaf threads is such a meticulous process that only four meters of fabric can be woven in a day. Using an intricate set of calculations, the weft is woven into a 150cm-wide, approximately 9,000 thread warp. A craftsperson pastes gold leaf onto paper and another craftsperson cuts the gold paper at several tenths of a millimeter to create the gold leaf thread, which is then woven in, creating an elegant look that radiates a mysterious glow depending on the angle, unlike that of any other fabric.
