Lake District Walks | The Newlands Round (a 5 Wainwright walk)

In late August 2022, Neil pays a visit to a true Lake District classic – the Newlands Round, near Keswick. There are several permutations for the round, depending on how many summits are included, and it can be done clockwise or anti-clockwise. Wainwright’s preference was for a clockwise route, starting with Maiden Moor, and descending off Hindscarth, and we’re not going to argue with that!

In this film, the route is anti-clockwise, starting from Little Town, climbing Robinson via the ridge (with a little bit of scrambling on Blea Crags), then on to Hindscarth, Dale Head, High Spy and finishing with Maiden Moor (home, famously, of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle).

Although not included in this film, our walk up Cat Bells is here: https://youtu.be/OF6D1F5kzMM

It’s a walk of roughly 10 miles, and 3,500 ft ascent, although some hills can easily be omitted, and there are various ways off, making it shorter (or, if needed, longer – primarily by including Cat Bells) and it is rightly famous for its sensational views into Buttermere, the stunning Newlands Valley and down over Derwentwater and across to Skiddaw.

  1. Great video 😀 love watching these multiple wainwright walks. I was watching you kentmere round the other day as well as I keep meaning to do that. Haven’t done this route before definitely looks like one to add on the list. Looks like a fun amount of scrambling. Thanks for sharing

  2. Great video Neil. I remember there were some scary drops on some of those scrambly sections on Robinson if you got it wrong. Glad you lived to tell the tale. 😊👍🏻

  3. Thanks for filming the boulder scrambling! By the way, who does the music? Great views, especially like the trails!
