Japanese Food & Sake in Setouchi

Setouchi is famous for being the home of Kobe Beef, but that is just the beginning of the amazing food in this culinary region of Japan! Have you heard of potentially deadly fugu, or blowfish? Well, here is the place to try it in Yamaguchi. Like noodles? Setouchi has so many different types that originated here. I loved the green tea flavored Kawara Soba from the Yamaguchi prefecture as well as the handmade soba noodles from the Iya Valley.
And who doesn’t love udon! We learned how to make this Japanese staple at the Nakano Udon School. I really enjoyed another style of udon too – Shinshoji Udo — which is thicker and served with special toppings. This is typically eaten by Japanese monks!
For an exquisite meal, try a Kaiseki, or tasting menu. Our 4 hour Kaiseki at the Ryokan Kurashiki was one of the most special food experiences I’ve EVER HAD. Each course was exciting, unique and delicious.
Setouchi is also known for being the home to sake! We headed to Nada to learn about the history of this cultural drink and to sample different varieties at the Kiku Masamune Brewery.
And these are just SOME of the highlights. There were so many more tasty snacks, tempura, noodles, sushi and more that we loved throughout this region. Are you hungry yet? You will be after this video!

  1. The cuisine looked amazing. The closest I've been to Japanese food was eating at Benihana's 🙂 The sake ice cream looked yummy. Thanks for sharing.
