Shibuya is synonymous with youth and has always been a trendsetter of the times. Although many people still come and go, it was only half a century ago that Shibuya became such a bustling place.
There are few data on Shibuya from ancient times to the Heian period (794-1185), and the Musashino area, including Shibuya, is said to have been a desolate area. During the Edo period (1603-1867), Shibuya came under the direct control of the shogunate, and samurai residences began to line the suburbs.
During the Meiji period (1868-1912), as prefectures were reorganized and laws were revised one after another, Shibuya was also merged into the surrounding villages and a town system was established. In 1885, Shibuya Station was established as one of the stations between Akabane and Shinagawa. However, compared to Shinjuku and Itabashi stations, which had developed as lodging towns, the area around Shibuya was deserted with no buildings.
Shibuya, which had been part of Musashi Prefecture, became Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, on October 1, 1932. The town gradually developed into a city, but was destroyed by fire during World War II.
After the war, plans were made to rebuild Shibuya as part of postwar reconstruction. This led to the development of Shibuya as a commercial district centered on Dogenzaka from the station. After 1955, a rush of office building construction began, and Shibuya began to function as Tokyo’s subcenter.
The Tokyo Olympics in 1964 marked the beginning of Shibuya’s development and expansion of its road network, and the streetscape was transformed.
Shibuya came into the limelight as a town for young people with the opening of PARCO, a commercial facility operated by Seibu Electric Railway Co. in 1973. Subsequently, Seibu opened entertainment facilities such as PARCO Part 2 and Part 3, PARCO Theater, and the live music venue Club Quattro. In addition to shopping, these music clubs sought to attract young people to Shibuya as a place for cultural activities.
Over the next few years, a succession of stores selling fashionable sundries to stimulate the curiosity of young people opened in the area, including Bunka-ya Zakka, Loft (Shibuya Seibu Loft Building), and Tokyu Hands of Tokyu Corporation, Seibu’s rival. In 1979, Shibuya’s leading fashion building, SHIBUYA109, opened, and young people began to visit Shibuya in search of the latest trends in entertainment, music, and fashion.
In the 1990s, a distinctive youth culture emerged, including “gyaru/gyaru-oh,” “Shibuya-kei,” and “amura,” and Shibuya became a mecca for this culture, which was widely covered by the mass media.
Although Shibuya has developed as a town for young people, large-scale development in recent years is transforming it into an “adult town.
In addition to “Shibuya Hikarie,” construction of large-scale office and commercial facilities such as “Shibuya Stream,” which houses Google’s new offices, and “Shibuya Scramble Square” have been completed one after another in the vicinity of the station. These buildings are expected to house many large corporations and IT venture companies.
With the decline in in-store consumption due to the rise of online shopping and the noticeable decrease in the number of young adults due to the declining birthrate, it is natural to target the adult segment of the population that has financial resources.
However, even in this environment, there are trendy spots that are unique to Shibuya, which has supported Japanese pop culture, such as the redevelopment of Miyashita Park, which combines a park, commercial facilities, and a hotel.
