The filming location was Shirogane Blue pond in Biei, Hokkaido. The location was recommended to us by artist Yoriko Koda.
The Shirogane Blue Pond is an artificial pond created by accidental accumulation of water in one of the block weirs erected on the Biei River as a disaster prevention measure to prevent volcanic mudflows following the eruption of Tokachi-dake volcano in December 1988.
Colloids” are formed when the clear water of the Biei River is mixed with the aluminum-rich groundwater flowing from the Shirahige Falls and other places. Colloidal particles drifting in the water reflect light in all directions when they collide, and blue light is easily scattered, so the blue light reflected in a short span of time reaches our eyes vividly. The sulfur and lime flowing from the hot springs accumulate in the soil and stain the bottom of the pond white, further enhancing the pond’s blue color.
The day was cloudy, with rain falling on and off since midnight. The clouds above were strong, and the wind blew hard from time to time on the ground. The weather was not conducive to seeing the clear blue of Biei, but at twilight, 30 minutes before sunrise, the entire sky was tinted red, and the light reflected off the clouds and turned the blue pond bright red. A momentary mystery created by the cloudy sky. The silent sympathy that occurs at this moment, I was given a superb good mode.
Yumoto Ryounkaku, located about 20 minutes by car from Blue pond, is the highest hot spring in Hokkaido at an altitude of 1,280 meters. The open-air bath offers a view of the majestic Tokachi-dake Mountain Range, and the water is brownish-brown and rich in iron.
