Keisuke Aiso created a silicone sculpture based on an “ubume,” a supernatural “yokai” monster, back in 2016. Then in 2018, he suddenly started receiving hate mail and death threats from strangers on the internet. He was being blamed for something called the “Momo Challenge.” The Japan Times spoke with Aiso to hear his thoughts about the recent viral internet hoax. “While I’m glad that my work is being known around the globe, I’d like to ask whoever is behind the phenomenon to be more discreet in using the image,” Aiso said.
