When I moved to Japan in 1984, Koenji was the first place that I lived – for about a year or so. I really liked the town. It's interesting to see how it looks in 2022. Some areas are much brighter. It's much more developed now. The basic structure is, of course, the same (and many of the side streets look similar in feeling) but in 1984 the town was not this lively and there were not this many shops. It was necessary to take a 5-minute train ride to Shinjuku to see more of a variety. (Tonikaku… natsukashii kanji, desu ne? 😉 )

Nice walk through Koenji. Most of the businesses are mom and pop – I am always glad to see how Tokyo shop owners keep brick and mortar small businesses alive and thriving! The fruit and vegetables at the food stores look fresh and delicious and so many restaurants. Thank you for revisiting this neighborhood.

I stayed in Koenji for about 2 months back in 2019. Some of my best memories were made there with random people chilling in the Izakaya's.
