“The main purpose of makeup for men is to simply add the necessary and eliminate the unnecessary … for us, makeup is just an extension of self-grooming,” says 29-year-old makeup adviser and guru Hiroki Takahashi. As a direct result of an especially bad case of teenage acne, Takahashi has since devoted his career to destigmatizing the idea of makeup being used as an everyday grooming tool for men. With a clientele of mostly middle aged men looking to regain their youthful looks, Takahashi strives for a world in which men can feel less insecure about their dark circles and unkempt eyebrows.
