Chasuriyama Kofun is a large mound tomb in Hyogo Prefecture built in the 5th Century AD. It’s 90 meters in diameter and 18 meters tall, the largest mound tomb in the area. Kofun were mound tombs built in Japan from the 3rd Century to the 7th Century for emperors, kings, governors, nobles, and chieftains.
I was staying in the area and decided to check it out with some friends one morning.

A giant Dohyō for the gods.
Were you at shimbashi station for the matsuri like three or four days ago? I did a double take, but wasn’t sure
your have left me in AWE
Kofun… looks like it can be pronounced “coffin”. Is that where the word is derived from?
The Kofun mounds look very similar to the Cahokia mounds built by the Mississippian culture. The only difference being use. The Kofun structures were built as large mausoleums to house the leadership and royalty of the Kofun period. The Cahokia mounds on the other hand, were used as large temples (much like Mesoamerican pyramids were).
