The city of Kyoto is always busy with festivals and cultural activities. In the summer of 2011, we had the opportunity to enjoy a very special event.
From August 6 to August 15, based in the ancient tradition of Tanabata, in several places around Kyoto antique/modern art displays and Light Up Show were held at night with the unique color and forms of the Japanese visual arts.
The Tanabata Festival takes place on July 7. According to the legend the two lovers Hikoboshi and Orihime, deities who were separated against their will, are allowed only in this day to cross the Milky Way and be together again.
As part of the festival, the people use to write their wishes in pieces of paper and then tie them to bamboo leaves.
In this context, this year’s Kyoto Tanabata Festival was dedicated to the people affected by the Earthquake and Tsunami in the Northeast Region of Japan on March 11, 2011.
In the displays and related activities, we counted with the participation of people from Sendai, Iwate, Miyajima, Fukushima and other affected regions. Also found races were conducted in favor of the victims. In general it was a huge effort to promote the recovery and reconstruction of the cities and to help in the relieve of those who are suffering difficulties even now, 6 months after.

I went there alone while I was living there, it was a magical time! I tried to capture it with my camera but it was super low light. Thanks for preserving this 🙂
