That isn't even taking into account the overseas departments and territories. I am really happy to have been born in Paris and to have lived my entire life in France. There's still so much I want to see!

  6. where Brittany 😢
From all the regions I’ve ever visited in France it’s by FAR the most beautiful …
It indeed has a very strong regional identity, which comes from celtic origins, just as Ireland or Scotland. There is also a proper language, which is very different from french but is very similar from Welsh language. There are whispers that the weather is quite rainy, but it’s part of the character.

In things you will not find anywhere else in France, there are the megalith (most known place : city of Carnac), known as « menhir » (« standing stone » in breton language). There are lots of little harbours on the coasts (with cute little fishing boats), and lots of « rias » (like fjords but without mountains). There are also lots of islands, as for exemple the Île de Sein, Belle île, Ouessant, and many many more.

One of the most unique things is the food, very different from France. The most known meal is the « galette ». It is a big pancake and thin pancake made out of buckwheat, filled with an egg, ham, and cheese. For the dessert, the « crepe » is just a big and thin pancake. The « beurre sucre » is the most iconic, a crepe with butter and sugar. There is also the « kouign-amann », a dessert mainly composed of butter.

One other iconic thing is the butter. Absolutely omniprésent in the cooking. And moreover, it is salted (or half-salted), it’s less bland. This is part of the very strong regional identity (strongest just after Corsica but it doesn’t count). There were and are independentist, autonomist and regionalist movements and candidates in elections. It is mainly due to the history. Indeed, Britanny was only reattached to France in 1532; just after the French Revolution, the government was opposed to religions. However, Brittany was VERY VERY catholic and attached to the king. It lead to a revolt, know as the Chouannerie. Even nowadays, unlike in France, highways are free. The region has its own anthem, Bro Gozh Ma Zadou. But the most iconic symbol is of course the Breton flag, the Gwen ha Du (literally « white and black ; it resembles the US flag but it IS OLDER). It is so iconic that if you watch french TV, every event with people, like Tour De France, any sport, or even démonstrations (we love that in France 😌), you’ll find at least one Breton flag.

Another big big part of the culture is the traditional music. It is mainly played by a « bagad », a huge groupe of musicians, playing bagpipe, snare, and « bombarde », an instrument looking like an oboe but quite a lot louder (the name tells everything). It comes with specific dances, such as the An Dro. Each major city has one of these Bagads, and compete in competitions. The best one is Quimper’s, Bagad Kemper. The music is played usually during Fest Noz (« night party »), a succession of traditional concerts during a whole night.

The region is composed of four departments (some would like five) : Finistère, cotes d’armor, Morbihan and Ille-et-Vilaine. The main cities are Rennes, Brest, Vannes, Quimper, and Saint-Brieuc. The touristic places are Pont-Aven (unavoidable), Carnac, the Pink Granite Coast, and the corsair city of Saint-Malo. The center is good to hike too. People are very nice also. There are a LOT of nautical activities to do, like kitesurf, sailing, sailboard, or just surf, with a huge international spot at La Torche (nearly chosen for 2024 Olympics). The city of Lorient is very interesting to visit, as it was a major German submarine base during WWII. It is also a hub for offshore sailing.

So yes basically Brittany (if you want to know, it’s called Bretagne in french, and Breizh in Breton language) IS one of the best region in France, along with Alsace, in order to avoid the so-much-overrated Paris and southern France.

    Signed : a Breton patriot
