A Narrated COMPLETE TECHNICAL WRECK DIVE On One Of The Largest Japanese Shipwrecks of WWII

We dive the Heian Maru, the longest wreck in Chuuk Lagoon, a Japanese WWII wreck graveyard in the islands of the Pacific. On this dive we use strobes and lines to explore the wreck, technical gear setup, and we bring deco bottles.

It’s hard to find complete technical dive videos with explanation, most videos are either short excerpts of a dive, or fail to explain what is actually going on. Hopefully this video is an exception!

As you can imagine we are not world experts in technical diving, and this is not a particularly ‘technical’ dive. We are learning just like you, please forgive any and all mistakes.

  1. Very helpful video! And yes you could have done things better but at least you knew you were learning and advising everyone to stick to their training level. 👌🏼

  2. Amazing Video. Her sister ship Hikawa Maru still exists and is a museum ship in Yokohama!

  3. That would be the Yoamoto. She had 18.5 inch triple turret main guns. The biggest in the world. We only had 16 in main guns.

  4. No dive plan, terrible trim, touching the wreck, penetrating without a line. This is tecrec at it's worst. Please learn to dive, plan Your dive and dive Your plan. Beautiful wreck.

  5. HELL NO!
DON'T TAKE THIS EXAMPLE AS ONE FOR A TECHNICAL DIVE! I have seen recreational divers beeing better than this…
Wreck penetration without training? NO! Bouyancy control and ascend rate? NO! Dive PLANNING???? NO!
A horrible example! Who certified you??? For real!
It was enjoyableto watch but really horrifying as well… PLEASE do yourself a favor and do a critical analysis for yourself. This is NOT what TECs would do!
    Thanks for sharing though…

  6. and another thing you should always do is a secondary tie off in case the primary attachment is cut or etc u still be able to have line to find your way out

  7. Hello, I am a recreational scuba instructor and have some feedback for you if you would be happy to read! I appreciate your honesty and approach to this video, this is quite an interesting watch, however as far as my knowledge is concerned I simply have to say that there were many wrong things happening on this dive: your buddy's trim and buoyancy was nowhere near the standard needed for tec diving, especially with flapping hands, not good finning technique, upright position. More than anything, this needs to be addressed, as not having a stable platform for your diving skills is dangerous! I personally would not attempt to enter a wreck without having absolutely fine tuned my personal buoyancy skills first and previsualised the plan of the dive. Not having a solid plan in advance and simply relying on your computer is really not ideal at this level of diving either. Leaving deco tanks sat on the unprotected surface of the wreck amongst corals and touching the wreck are also no-nos! Lastly I was horrified that the ascent line was looped around a poor coral! Not your fault of course but was stunned to see this! On the positive side, as mentioned before, great that you were so openly honest about learning and improving all the time, good to hear! Also, looked like you and your buddy were well practiced in communicating, which is very important!

  8. the best way for me to learn is to do it "safely" and slowly. Everyone is gonna make some mistakes along the way. Seems like you're doing great and having fun.

  9. Yall have to assess every pathway on the spot? Wow. Amazing video and great narration, too.

  10. What about your fins…why don't you have fin redundancy in case one or both slip off and you loose them at sea?

  11. This is such a great video – really appreciated your clarity and narration! I'd love to see more videos like this.

  12. you guys scare me, stay safe, continue training with a more experienced tutor ♥️

  13. Awesome dive and awesome video. Thanks for the talk through walk through. Very informative to a new diver like me.

  14. Thanks for posting this video. Please keep diving and training. I am sorry to say that your buddy really needs to uplift his skills especially that he is a “tech “ diver. Proper weighting , buoyancy , trim and kicking are fundamental skills of tech diving and it is very clear that he’s not competent enough in any. Line skills also require training and are paramount when it comes to wreck penetration. imagine getting entangled on that reel line for example?! So many things could go wrong. Once again thank you for walking us through this video. Stay safe and keep diving

  15. I'm new to watching wreck dives so I really really appreciate the step by step guide as he going around the ship. It's stunning, that first pic was amazing. I'm finding it hard to navigate the floor and the walls tho. I look forward to watching more of ur videos.
Say your diving a wreck where there's no place to wrap ur line around or a place to clip strobes/lines, how would u go about attaching it then?

  16. Brother, you did a great job explaining Tech Diving and narrating the dive. Looking forward to Truk myself.

  17. Thanks for sharing👍
There's a lot wrong with this dive, but I think you know that so I won't detail the different points.
We all learn on every dive 🤿

  18. Thanks for the video would love to see more. I dont understand all the comments from the peanut gallery. You admitted this was learning. I guess we have the worlds best divers on these comments. Every negative comment they said you addressed in the video. Maybe if they took their heads out or their asses they might be able to losten and realize you addressed lines, trim, buoyancy, learning and perfecting skills. Great job for having the balls and discipline to start tech diving.

  19. This is FANTASTIC content. I really appreciate your narration of what you're doing, what you've changed or re-evaluated, everything. It's like a lot of aviation youtubers (like FlightChops), but wetter.

    Great work!

  20. I love your narrative style, as someone interested in wreck diving it was awesome to see how you think through the steps
