Why I Left Japan | JET Program | Rural Japan

I was living in Japan for 1 year on a rural island teaching English. Here’s the story of why I moved to Japan and how I decided that I wanted to leave. I talk about what it was like living there, what the JET Program contract was like, and also what it was like to leave and go back to the U.S. and eat good pizza again.

About me
I’m logiebear. I was in the Jet Program, teaching English on an island in rural Japan from August 2018-2019. I’m now back in the San Francisco Bay Area. I love eating, traveling, and being creative.

  1. Unfortunately because of the new normal we are losing many of the restaurants in the San Francisco bay area, and a lot of the food that makes it great

  2. Sounded silly until I recalled my own pizza making addiction. I regret nothing.

  3. I'm Japanese but I've never been to Tsushima. I stayed in San Francisco for 3 months tho.
According my friend who are comming to Japan on JET soon you can request your favorable region like big cities, countryside, anywhere else but Tokyo, cold place warm place. When you speak Japanese well it's likely they are going to send you to countryside.

  4. Thanks for the update. I'm glad that it sounds like you've had some pretty rich & fulfilling experiences traveling & living abroad as long as you did.

  5. I think the food in Japan is a lot better than pizza and tacos. But each his or her own taste.

  6. …so happy to see you post another video! Please continue making vids! Are you pursuing a career as a teacher here in America?
PS. Your personality is the greatest. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Stay safe and healthy.

  7. Well, at least you're very diverse in your palate lol. Not just eating your own food, even in the states. I studied abroad in Europe for a semester and I did miss some food (homemade), but Europe is also very diverse, so yeah I can see why Japan would be less diverse in food

  8. Please keep making videos….you sharing your experiences with all of us make us all more worldly.
Thanks to you I've studied on Japan more and have a greater desire to go abroad.
You have added New Life to my Old Life.
    Thank You.

  9. I wonder if the pizza & taco sitch is better in one of the bigger cities? Like… if you were in Tokyo or Kyoto. Also, I like how you locked into those two foods ๐Ÿ˜„. Thanx for these great videos and good luck to you. Hope you do more travel videos; youโ€™re a delight to watch โ˜บ๏ธ

  10. Stay away from Japan. Radioactive contamination problem is still ongoing problem in Japan. Almost 18,000 Japanese people died with cancer or leukemia caused by radioactive contamination from Fukushima. Stop eating radioactive contaminated food and water. Otherwise, you're going to get cancer, leukemia or infertility. Japan WAS good country but it's severely contaminated by radiation since Fukushima earthquake happened in 2011. Additionally Japanese government is trying to hide the truth about radioactive contamination. However, People have the right to know the truth and what's going on really in Japan.

  11. Maybe you can introduce someone in Japan amazing pizza and tacos. It may be a stereotype but if you can get a Japanese person very interested in something, that passion will help fuel some of the best versions of that food, ever!

  12. I totally get you with the food and fulfilling what you wanted to do while in Japan. I love my Italian food but when I got to Japan I found their Italian food plain (though I love the Japanese katsu curry, ramen and yakitori). when I got back to the UK i started missing the Japanese food.

I decided to study at a university just so I could study abroad at my dream university in japan and experience an onsen. I did get the opportunity to study abroad in June-July 2018 for a summer school but it wasn't at the university i wanted to go to in Tokyo nor did I have enough money for Tokyo (I did go to Osaka and Kyoto though).even though i found out I failed uni in general while i was in Japan I was fulfilled with getting to study abroad and visit an onsen. I am already planning to go to Tokyo in 2022

  13. It sounds like you had a great experience in Japan. I went to Japan for a missions trip for three months and I taught English at a church in Tokyo. Does the career that you want to pursue have any job opportunities in Japan?

  14. I live in SF bay area also. I have never been to Japan, but would like to go. I am thinking of learning Japanese on my own at first and maybe work with an online tutor. I have plenty of time to study as I am a retired scientist. I probably spend too much time watching youtube videos about Japan instead of planning when to go there. Since I just found your channel and saw your apartment tour and this video I look forward to watching more of your videos.

  15. The same problem of being asked about staying a 2nd year so early on also applies to be asked about staying on a 3rd year after having only been there for little more than one year.

I still think the sweet spot is two yearsโ€ฆ the seasons and various festivals are a big deal in Japan and experiencing them is extra magical the 2nd time aroundโ€ฆ you feel much more at home than the 1st year when everything is new and unfamiliar.

Some (but not all) 3rd years are slightly hardened, perhaps wishing they had left after two years. Many are happy every day they get to experience a truly incredible country.

  18. I wanted to try it out but i hear so many pros and cons about it. I dont like getting placed in a random spot.

  19. Btw, don't mind me asking some questions, just curious to know from your perspective.

    1) Do you consider Japan as a highly developed and advanced country ?

    2) How would you personally rate Japan (from culture to technology, architecture, food, local products, scenery/landscape, standard of living/quality of life, etc.) on a scale level of 1 to 10 ?

    3) What is your overall impression with the Japanese people ?

    4) If you have 3 words or more to describe Japan, what would it be ?
