INSIDER’s A.C. Fowler heads to Iceland’s Blue Lagoon, a natural hot spring. Is it a lavish luxury or an overpriced public pool?

The Blue Lagoon is in Grindavík, a 45-minute drive from Iceland’s capital Reykjavík, a quickly growing tourist hot spot. The area is a perfect blend of city and country living.

A.C. tests how crowded it is, if it’s worth the $58 admission, and if the lagoon’s water and mud really have healing properties.

The Blue Lagoon is one of the most visited destinations in Iceland. 80% of tourists who come to the country trek to the famous thermal waters.

While the physical lagoon is man-made, the natural geothermal waters are sourced from a nearby geothermal field.

The peak season is the summer, so the best time to visit the Blue Lagoon is in the winter.

CEO Grímur Sæmundsen said, “To be in the Blue Lagoon and having the Northern Lights, there’s nothing that beats it.”

The Blue Lagoon also acts as a facility for skin care research, so it makes sense that its biggest selling point is its natural silica mud masks.

Make sure you head to the lagoon early in the day to beat the crowds. Keep it mind that it can be pricey, so make sure you’re picking a package that fits your needs. And don’t be afraid to lather on the complimentary silica masks.

Is Iceland’s Blue Lagoon A Lavish Luxury? | Destination Debunkers

  1. Years ago – before the tourists – you got the body salts for free as they were in buckets alongside the pool. It was nice sitting up along side the pool and rub the salt all over – jump in – and repeat. I don't know about the mud. I forget the admission price back then in the early '00s but the $60 or so is absolutely worth it; if you want to waste money get the robe that you only have to return – though not for me. Recently, we have not had the time for the Blue Lagoon but your video ignited good memories, especially when we were last there when the air temp was a rare (for southern Iceland) zero (0) F with a breeze – – and now we have to return! CAUTION, I do not advise testing lava springs to skimp on lagoons. Thanks!

  2. Quick question, if the lagoon is warm, full of minerals and have algae in it, wouldnt bacteria form as well with so much organic materials and minerals to work with?

  3. Cheap @ss to complain about the price . The price is just reasonable. €55 is a bargain ,even for an experience. I thought it was a lot dearer than that. Those who cried about the price , shouldn't have gone anywhere further than their back garden.

  4. I can pay $500 for the all inclusive, I 've wasted more then that in Vegas and got nothing out of it

  5. Just want to warn everybody about using Northern lights car rental at the Keflavík airport, they are scammers they find ways to charge you for damage that was done previously before your rental, then don’t even fix the car for the next rental. They have their own workshop, so all repairs are done in house but they say they are using a mechanic. Be very cautious.

  6. I was stationed there in '85 and there was no buildings there and we'd just drive up and jump in. BTW, Beer was still illegal then.

  7. I just wouldn't want to touch the bottom Idk I fell like I'd burn my feet idk?

  8. Believe me if the skin products worked or 8f the blue lagoon had great impact on the skin, Nicole Kidman would have bought it and wouldnt look very old at her, now, 50!!!

  9. If I flew all the way to Iceland I would be happy to pay the $77 to get into and enjoy the Blue lagoon. It's more than your average public pool my God you're in Iceland live it up man and enjoy.

  10. 3:48 please tell me this is cell phone video… I want to see this once in my life but I always think it's just a camera trick or fancy editing… Are the colors really that vivid? I must discover for myself!

  11. 77 bucks ain't bad. I can be fancy and polite.
Hello I'm here for the bath. I want to feel the peacefulness and eat McDonald's while I'm there and see your landscape. Maybe even buy some local clothes and eat at a mom and pop restaurant. May I enter?

  12. Many years ago my friend and I did an Iceland quick trip. It included the Blue Lagoon. It was the highlight of our trip. The smell of the minerals in that water was the freshest and cleanest smell; I wish I could have bottled that clean smell and taken back home with me. I would go back to Iceland in heartbeat!

  13. I cringed when i saw him trampling on the moss. I have heard of people wanting to leave their mark but did you have to leave your footprints here for the next century?

  14. Love how WOW air declared bankruptcy and stopped operations like a week after this video was posted
