As hikers prepare to ascend Mount Fuji for the 2022 season, it’s worth celebrating the achievements of the country’s female mountaineers both above and below the clouds. In 1832, Tatsu Takayama reached the 3,776-meter summit of Mount Fuji, becoming the first woman on record to have scaled Japan’s highest peak. These days, the sport is becoming more popular but not all climbers are being treated equally. While the popularity of outdoor activities such as hiking has boomed among women — giving rise to the moniker “yama gāru” (“mountain girl”) — “there aren’t many women excelling at an elite level,” says Sumiko Kashiwa, a writer and hiking guide who is writing a book about mountain girls in the Heisei Era (1989-2019).
