A trip to the Gangshan Shoutian Temple and PingHe Road.
Gangshan was founded in 1920. The story goes that the founder was a
Japanese General from Okayama and he felt that the area resembled Okayama.
Okayama is written in Japanese as 岡山 and when pronounced in Mandarin is pronounced as Gangshan.
The area has an air base dating back to the 1920s.
Gangshan Shoutian Temple was originally a Japanese shrine and the original
Tori Gate is still present. The Tori Gate faces directly east/west. It is one of few remaining
Tori Gates in Taiwan. There are also some relics from the Japanese shrine.
PingHe Road is the “old street” for Gangshan. Many 100+ year old houses can still
be found along the road and on the side streets. One of the buildings is a doctor’s office.
This doctor’s office currently has the third generation of doctors practicing.
The son and father are practicing medicine here and before that it was the father and
his father.
Enjoy the sites in the area.
