For most people, Matsushima Bay is famous for its scenic views and islands covered in pine trees, but did you know that the area is also famous for its oysters? The town is well-known for its top quality oysters and they are a must try when visiting in-season between October and March.
Many restaurants and food stalls around town serve a variety of oyster related dishes. You can find the standard grilled oyster teishoku (set meals), or you can go for something a little more unusual such as deep-fried oysters or even oyster curry bread! However, if you have a big appetite then the best way to satisfy yourself is to go for an all you can eat course of oysters. At the Matsushima Oyster Shack ran by the Matsushima Tourism Association, you can have your fill of Matsushima oysters grilled right in front of you for 40 minutes at only 2,300 yen!

How to get to Matsushima Bay:
1. Nearest large city with Shinkansen and airport is in Sendai
2. From Sendai, take the Senseki Line to Matsushima Kaigan (40mins, 860 yen)
