I spent Nyepi in the village of Medewi which I was informed is the only place in Bali that is exempt from the restrictions of the celebration. This is due to the predominate Muslim population living here. However I did not journey here for this specific reason. It just happened to be the timing of my trip. I have spent Nyepi in other parts of Bali in previous years and enjoyed the ritual of self reflection and the time of silence.
Nyepi is a Balinese “Day of Silence” that is commemorated every Isakawarsa (Saka new year) according to the Balinese calendar. It is a Hindu celebration mainly celebrated in Bali, Indonesia. Observed from 6 a.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning.
In Medewi you see an influx of travellers who make the pilgrimage to avoid this and to spend the day outside surfing and partying.
I have to say it was so wonderful to see the whole community of Medewi gathering on the main road, empty of the usual trucks and transport. They all get together and simply play all kinds of games, music and dance on the street. It was such a beautiful experience. I also got some surfing and painting in myself too.
