The Taiwan Railways Administration’s Taipei Railway Workshop / 國家鐵道博物館籌備處 (國定古蹟臺北機廠), a 16.82-hectare site on Civic Boulevard, was the largest and oldest of its kind on the island. For decades, it manufactured and maintained thousands of railway vehicles. The Workshop was established in 1935 replacing the original workshop, which had become became inadequate. The Governor-General of Taiwan recognized its establishment as celebrating the Empire of Japan ruling Taiwan for 40 years. It has remained unused since it closed down in 2012 ; but is (slowly….) being turned into a huge museum (one of the guides figures work will be done in another 6 years).
Free tours (only in Chinese) are available at 10AM and 2PM on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Tours are limited to 40 people and must be booked online ( starting on the 20th for the following month.
