Onbashira is a very old Japanese festival in Nagano Prefecture which also has a reputation of being one of the deadliest. Every 6 years as part of the shrine renewal process, trees are cut down and transported to two local shrines. Along the way they are pulled down hillsides and across rivers such as here. The hillside parts as the most famous but more dangerous are river- crosses where participants have drowned in the past. The most dangerous part is the actual raising of the posts.
