What’s in Yamagata? Here’s what there is to do there, around Sendai and this area of Tohoku in Japan, as well as where to stay and train passes that could save you money.
Yamagata prefecture’s only a couple of hours away from Tokyo on the bullet train, so it’d be easy to spend a few days in Tokyo, then move north to Tohoku for a few days and see a different side of Japan, in the countryside and the mountains. Here’s my wishlist of things I’d like to do there, including Yamadera, a temple in the mountains with a beautiful view, Ginzan Onsen, Mount Zao and its snow monsters, a wasabi farm, a sightseeing river cruise and local specialties: Yonezawa beef, cherries and soba noodles.
