Japan Van Life Ch 38: Merry Chickenmas!

Fried chicken as big as your face?? Where do we sign up?

Not far from Osaka’s famous Dotonbori food street and the bright lights and moving billboards of Minami (Namba), you’ll find Shinsaibashi; a street food heaven in the heart of Japan’s kitchen. Today we’re showing you how we spent Christmas day in Japan. To keep the commercial Japanese Christmas tradition alive, we’re taking you on a food tour of the area in search of the best fried chicken in Osaka (what is Christmas in Japan without fried chicken, after all?) and we might have found the biggest fried chicken we’ve ever seen in our lives! It might not be KFC, it’s definitely a fried Christmas chicken!

Fried Chicken Steak at En Shi Da Ji Pai (Shinsaibashi Store) / 炎旨大鶏排 心斎橋店

Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and big enough to cover your face! Although Da Ji Pai only opened its doors in Osaka in 2020, this trendy restaurant and its famously large Taiwanese chicken karaage is well on the way to becoming Osaka’s most Instagrammable restaurant!

En Shi Da Ji Pai’s speciality Taiwanese chicken steak is hand-stretched, and covered in cassava flour before being slowly deep fried for the perfect juicy crunch. You can choose between 5 different flavors (“jao yang feng” pepper salt powder, curry, Cajun, chili lemon & coriander/cilantro), with the recommended flavour for deep fried chicken steak beginners being 椒鹽粉 (ジャオヤンフェン, “jao yang feng”); a unique blend of spices that make for the perfect, simple Taiwanese style fried chicken taste.

What makes this shop even cooler is that customers can also choose from a selection of Taiwanese beverages that you won’t find anywhere else. A Taiwanese beer and deep fried chicken set will cost you 1,100 yen (around $10) and Da Ji Pai also offers other traditional Taiwanese street food favourites, so you can sit outside and pretend you’re on the streets of Taiwan, right in the middle of Osaka! You can find En Shi Da Ji Pai’s huge fried chicken at its other brances in Nagoya, Kyoto, Tokyo & Fukuoka, too. It’s easy to see why the shop has grown in popularity and why you can find stores dotted around major cities in Japan!
