In late July 2019 we visited Heaven’s Gate Fire Lookout on the Idaho side of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.
After an interesting 19 mile drive over Forest Service Roads we arrived at the parking area. From the parking area it is a short .2 mile hike to the lookout.
Heaven’s Gate Lookout is one of the best viewpoints in the Hells Canyon Recreation Area. At 8,400 feet elevation, Heaven’s Gate offers great views into the Seven Devils Mountains. Also from the lookout you can see across all of Idaho into the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana. Looking in the other direction you are looking into Oregon and Washington.
Directions: From Riggins, Idaho, travel south on Highway 95 for 1.3 miles to Seven Devils Road(Forest Road 517), turn right on Seven Devils Road and go 17 miles. Turn Right at the Windy Saddle-Seven Devils Campground sign and travel 2 miles to The Heaven’s Gate Trailhead.
