Wakayama’s Niutsuhime Shrine is one of the prefecture’s oldest shrines, with a recorded history of around 1700 years. Since 2004, the shrine has also been designated as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site (under the Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range).
