Meiji shrine (Meiji Jingu) is a Shinto shrine in Shibuya, Tokyo, that is told to be the most popular location for hatsumode (first shrine/temple visit of the year) in Japan.
It was built in honor of Emperor Meiji, who presided over the Meiji Era, a time of rapid change, in which Japan transformed from an isolationist, feudal state to an industrialized world power.
The building at its present form was built in 1958. The original building (which was built in 1926) was destroyed during the Tokyo air raids of World War II.
The Meiji Shrine is located in an evergreen forest that consists over 120,000 trees of 365 different species that were donated by people from all over Japan at the time when the shrine was established.
